Marsha Chan has been on the full-time faculty at Mission College since January 1986. While teaching any and all of the courses in the ESL curriculum, (listening and speaking, grammar and writing, reading and vocabulary, and pronunciation), Marsha Chan delights in enhancing learning activities with current technology. This includes audio recording, video recording, interactive language lab, CD-ROMs, email, voice mail, online chatting, collaborative writing with computers, Internet searching, presentation and interactive multimedia software.
During her years of teaching at Mission, Marsha Chan has taught on-campus, off-campus and online classes in the ESL and Computer Applications departments. She has given Staff Development workshops on such topics as Using Audacity to Create Audio Podcasts, Creating Assessments in AngelLearning, Evaluating the Intelligibility of Non-Native English Speakers, Assessing ESL Listening and Speaking Skills, and Enhancing your PowerPoint Presentations. She has served on the college's Title 5 grant as curriculum writer, pilot teacher and trainer. She has been involved in many initiatives of the Workplace Learning Resource Center. She has served on various commitees such as the Distance Learning Committee, the Academic Senate and the Instructional Technology Committee. She has also acted as Faculty Advisor to the Chinese Students Association.
One of her long-term projects was the procurement of a state-of-the-art interactive multimedia language laboratory for the ESL Department, which serves nearly 1,400 students per semester. A recipient of an Innovation Grant, she spent many academic years on the language lab project, and she continues to coordinate the lab and offer technology leadership.
Prof. Chan is the recipient of several excellence awards, including the 1988 Mission College President's Award, the 1995 Mission College Faculty Recognition Award for Service to the College Excellence, the 1994 and 1996 National Institute for Staff and Organizational (NISOD) Excellence Awards, and the 2002 Mission College Faculty Recognition Award for Publication and Presentation Excellence. She was also a nominee for the 2003 David R. Pierce Faculty Technology Award, the 2004 Mission College Excellence in Service to the College award, and the 2006 Mission College Faculty Recognition Award for Publication and Presentation Excellence.
A graduate of Stanford University, Marsha Chan earned Bachelor's degrees in Art and French and a Master's degree in Education, specializing in bilingual and foreign language instruction. She earned elementary and secondary school credentials from San Jose State University before settling on community college teaching. She has taken course work in foreign languages, computer applications, web development, multimedia development, graphic art and graphic design at various institutions, including the University of California at Berkeley, Foothill College and Mission College. She has taught in Hong Kong, mainland China, and California.
Marsha Chan is the author of College Oral Communication 1 and Phrase by Phrase Pronunciation in American English textbook, CDs and DVDs. She is a contributing author of Longman English Interactive, a multimedia learning series consisting of four instructional levels that each provide 100 hours of instruction. As for professional presentations, she frequently speaks at conferences for educators. Her recent presentations include Using Web Conferencing (CCC Confer) to Enhance Online Learning, Pronunciation Games, Teaching Interactively in a Computer Lab, Technology: A New Era in Learning, Using Digital Sound Files for Pronunciation, and Competency-based Objectives for Listening and Speaking. She also accepts speaking engagements at schools, colleges and universities in California, in other states, and other countries such as China.
