Pamela Couch has been an English as a Second Language professional since the early 1980s. Before coming to Mission College this August, she worked at Boston University, where she taught ESL and trained International Teaching Fellows. Pamela has also taught at Boston College, Harvard School of Public Health, San Diego State University, University of California San Diego (TESOL certificate program), and the University of Minnesota.

In addition to her work at US colleges and universities, Pamela has taught at several schools in Asia and Eastern Europe. For the past seven summers, she has provided English support for international management programs in Kobe, Japan and Shanghai, China. She has also taught English in a leadership seminar for Chinese government officials in Beijing. Her earlier experience abroad includes teaching a seminar in instructional technology to foreign language teachers at the University of Kiev in Ukraine. In addition, she received a Fulbright grant to teach EFL at the University of Skopje in the former Yugoslavia.

Pamela received her Ed.D. in Curriculum and Teaching from Boston University, her M.A. in English as a Second Language from the University of Minnesota, and her B.A. in Slavic Languages and Literature from Indiana University. Her research has been in second language writing, with an emphasis on technology and the writing process.

In her spare time, Pamela enjoys traveling and learning about other cultures. She also participates in several different kinds of exercise, including jazz tap dancing, kickboxing, hiking, and skating. An avid baseball fan, she is looking forward to watching the Giants play very soon.

Pamela is excited about joining the faculty at Mission College and working with the diverse student body. She looks forward to being at a school that respects each individual’s life experience, cultural background, and learning strategies. Finally, she feels that this will be a wonderful opportunity to share ideas with colleagues from different academic departments and work together to provide students with a meaningful educational experience.
