Rachel Haug Lowenberg received her master's degree in English with a Concentration in Teaching English as a Foreign Language from SFSU in 1978. Her undergraduate degree, also from SFSU, is in literature and linguistics. She has taught ESL at many different universities and colleges around the country, including University of Illinois, George Washington University, Washington, D.C., San Francisco State University, University of California at Berkeley, and Foothill College. She is a summer lecturer in the English for Foreign Students Program at Stanford University. Rachel began teaching at Mission College as an associate faculty member in 1993, and was appointed to the full-time ESL position at Mission in 1997.

Rachel lived and taught in Asia for four years: two years in Japan, where she studied classical Japanese music and taught English in the workplace, and two years in Java, Indonesia, where she taught English at the Surabaya Binational Center and at the International School.

In addition to teaching English, Rachel enjoys learning about other cultures and languages, reading world history, playing the piano, and hiking the Sierra. She appreciates the cultural diversity at Mission College, and values teaching here because she learns as much from the students as they do from her.
