Vietnamese 1: Beginning Vietnamese
Credit: 5 units
Lecture: 5 hours
Advisory: Eligibility for English 108A or English 59
Co-requisite: Vietnamese 1L
Acceptable for credit: University of California, California State University
The student will learn the fundamentals of Vietnamese grammar and pronunciation, and will be able to converse and write on a limited scale on topics of everyday importance. Emphasis will be placed on communication and relevancy. A variety of activities will encourage the student to use the language creatively in meaningful situations, and the student will be exposed to various aspects of the culture of the Vietnamese-speaking world.

Vietnamese 1L: Vietnamese Laboratory
Credit: 1/2 unit
Lab: 1.7 hours per week
Acceptable for credit: California State University
This is a separate laboratory course, offered by arrangement at the student's convenience, which aims to present the culture of the Vietnamese-speaking world through a variety of media. The student will review the customs and culture of Vietnam through computer software,
DVDs, CDs, videos, tapes, and current publications. Students may also use the Vietnamese language programs to reinforce speaking skills and oral comprehension and to improve pronunciation. This course provides an excellent supplement to Vietnamese 1. It may be taken independently, however, by students not enrolled in a foreign language course as many cultural materials have texts in both English and Vietnamese. May be repeated once for credit.

Vietnamese 2: Beginning Vietnamese
Credit: 5 units
Lecture: 5 hours
Prerequisite: Vietnamese 1 with a grade of C or better, or its equivalent
(2 years of high school Vietnamese)
Co-requisite: Vietnamese 2L
Acceptable for credit: University of California, California State University
In this course, the student will continue his/her development of
speaking, reading and writing skills, and increase his/her vocabulary
and knowledge of basic Vietnamese grammar. More emphasis will be placed on
self-expression and readings from topics of general interest. Topics will include further exploration of the culture and geography of the Vietnamese-speaking world.

Vietnamese 2L: Vietnamese Laboratory

This course is a continuation of Vietnamese 1L, although Vietnamese 1L is not a prerequisite. The student will expand his/her knowledge of the culture
or language of Vietnamese-speaking people through further use of computer software,
DVDs, CDs, videos, tapes, and current publications. Programs
providing Vietnamese language and pronunciation drill are also available. This course provides an excellent supplement to Vietnamese 2. Vietnamese 49A: Language and Culture for Fluent Speakers
Credit: 3 units

Advisory: Native-level speaking ability in Vietnamese
Acceptable for credit: University of California, California State University
This course, designed for those who are fluent speakers of Vietnamese, presents a comparison between the Vietnamese spoken in the U.S. and the formal written and spoken Vietnamese language. Emphasis is on study of Vietnamese culture, society, and history. This course will also include the accomplishments of the Vietnamese people both in Vietnam and in the U.S. This course is taught primarily in Vietnamese.
Credit/No Credit Option.

Vietnamese 49B: Language and Culture for Fluent Speakers
Credit: 3 units
Lecture: 3 hours
Prerequisite: Vietnamese 49A
Acceptable for credit: University of California, California State University
This course, designed for those who are fluent speakers of Vietnamese, is a continuation of Vietnamese 49A. It consists of three segments: language, culture, and Vietnamese-Americans. The course includes (1) a further study of the spoken language and the different styles of the written language; (2) a detailed examination of the distinctive features of Vietnamese culture through readings in Vietnamese poetry, prose, and the arts; and (3) a study of the accomplishments of the Vietnamese in their home country and in the U.S. This course is taught primarily in Vietnamese.

Vietnamese 50A: Basic Conversational Vietnamese and Culture
Credit: 3 units
Lecture: 3 hours
Prerequisite: Recommended eligibility for English 108A or English 59
Acceptable for credit: California State University
Designed for beginners desiring a basic, practical conversational approach to learning a language, this course emphasizes conversation and vocabulary-building with a minimum of grammar. A variety of classroom activities will permit the student to actively use the language while studying it. Cultural topics will center on Vietnamese customs and traditions, including family concepts, religion, special events, food, etc. This course is not intended for fluent speakers of Vietnamese.

Vietnamese 50B: Basic Conversational Vietnamese and Culture
Credit: 3 units
Lecture: 3 hours
Prerequisite: Vietnamese 50A
Acceptable for credit: California State University
This course is a continuation of Vietnamese 50A. Students will increase their vocabulary and knowledge of basic grammatical structures while emphasizing conversation. The culture of Vietnam will be presented through newspaper and magazine articles as well as a variety of audio-visual materials.
