Picture of Karl, Huong and Barbara Karl's interests include running, bicycling, backpacking, and tennis ... all of which are temporarily curtailed due to the newest member of his family.

Karl and his wife, Huong, happily announce the birth of their new daughter, Barbara. She was born on April 17, 1998 at 1:59 PM. Karl and Huong would like to express their appreciation to his students, members of the mathematics department, and colleagues who took great joy in their happiness. Karl took banked leave in the fall semester of 1998 to spend time with Barbara while Huong continues school at San Jose State University.

SCVMA Logo

As past-president and secondary schools chairman, Karl is an active member of the Santa Clara Valley Mathematics Association, California Mathematics Council-Northern Section, CMC3, and NCTM. He writes a number of mathematics contests sponsored by SCVMA each year including the SCVMA Math Olympiad. Mission College has been the proud host of the SCVMA Math Olympiad for the past two years. This year, the Olympiad will be held in Sorenson Hall on December 12, 1998. Another colleague, Dr. Clement Lam is the newest recruit to the activities of the organization. He wrote the latest Algebra I Madhatter in this year's SCVMA Math Field Day at San Jose State University. Karl along with associate professor, John Nakahama, are currently, the SCVMA Newsline Editors. The Newsline is the SCVMA newsletter that brings announcements of county, state, and national mathematics activities into the classroom of the members. The Teaching Ideas sections are shared and exchanged with teachers throughout the state. The Mission College Mathematics Department will continue to be an integral part of the mathematics activities in Santa Clara County.

Jose Valdes Summer Math Institute

For the past five years, Mission College has been one of the sites for the Jose Valdes Math Institute which is a summer program whereby middle school students from throughout Santa Clara County are invited to Mission College and enrolled in a intensive 7-week program (7 hours a day) of mathematics development. Karl Ting, Rick Hobbs , and John Nakahama have, in the past, coordinated the efforts of our department and worked with the instructors and staff of the institute to bring about the best learning environment possible. The institute will have classes in the newly remodeled MT buildings this summer, and Karl will be the mathematics department representative.
