White House Community Conversation Stops at Mission College
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Santa Clara, California. Sunday, August 23, 2009

On Sunday, August 23rd, 40 local educational and Hispanic leaders and community members gathered at Mission College to hear and give input to the White House Initiative on Higher Education Excellence for Hispanic Americans.

This community conversation was the last stop in California and the only one in the Bay Area after making stops in Sacramento, the Central Valley, Los Angeles and San Diego. The Executive Director of the Initiative, Mr. Juan Sepulveda, presented an overview of educational issues and the Administration’s plan to remedy them. After this he asked for participant volunteers to share their thoughts about current educational issues, problems and solutions. Following this, attendees got into groups of six to brain storm major issues and ways each of them could be involved in bringing resolution and moving the administration’s plan forward.

Among those participating was WVMCCD Trustee Chris Stampolis, West Valley College President, Lori Fox, and Mission College V.P. of Instruction, Norma Ambriz-Galaviz. For more information about the administration’s plans, go to www.ed.gov and/or www.whitehouse.gov.
